The Northeast Region of ABM Janitorial Services has an opening for a Safety Coordinator. This is a FULL TIME EXEMPT position.Location - Position will work out of the Northeast Regional Office in New York City and report to the Regional Director of Risk Management and Safety. Initial focus will be on New York City however, the role will extend to other branches depending on business necessity. Thus, ability to travel is a required.Hours- Typically, the hours of work will be 4:00PM 12:00AM. However, the hours are flexible depending upon business necessity and particular assignment.Job Summary Responsibilities:-Conduct loss prevention (safety) inspections and job hazard assessments at work sites primarily in Manhattan.-Conduct employee safety training on a site to site basis with emphasis on loss prevention and hazardous communication.-Respond to injury and illness incidents immediately. As necessary, conduct thorough investigations to determine the root cause of incidents and make recommendations to prevent same from re-occurring.-Communicate all findings to appropriate regional risk management personnel for follow up with employees and processing of all work related insurance claims.-Demonstrate ABM's commitment to employee safety and loss prevention by regularly meeting and communicating with employees at their work sites and eliciting feedback from them and communicating that feedback to regional risk management.-Assist the region in administering current employee safety incentive initiatives and with developing initiatives that are directly related to safety performance while fostering a positive connection between employees and ABM. -Generate weekly and monthly activity reports with findings and recommendations.Education/Experience/Skills-A Bachelors degree in a related area such as Safety Management or Human Resources Management is a plus.- 2 years of work experience desirable in area of Safety Management, Human Resources Management, or Training/Communications.-Project management experience is desirable with the ability to prioritize and function in an occasionally stressful, multi task environment.-Customer-service oriented individual who is highly motivated and maintains a positive attitude regardless of the situation at hand. Must be a true champion and believer in the cause of providing a safe environment for all employees.- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Safety Coordinator Position Description Dynamic New York City construction management company seeks a Safety Coordinator; this position will be approximately 75% field-based reporting to the Vice President, Risk Management Services, and will involve interaction on every job site. Regular work hours will be 7-4; however, if required for off-hour priorities, Safety Coordinator will be expected to be available. The person must be a NYC Certified Site Safety Manger at time of hire, or have passed the test and be in the investigative phase within three months after employment begins. Typical responsibilities during field visits will include, but not be limited to: Ensure all required NYC permits are posted and up-to-date, e.g. DOB, DOT Ensure all fire-related items are installed properly painted appropriate colors per most recent FDNY promulgated rules Ensure all required signage is displayed, such as EXIT signs, No Smoking signs, fire extinguisher locations Address public protection requirements as they pertain to NYC Site Safety regulations Monitor areas of concern including but not limited to scaffold erection, form work, work in confined areas, temporary lighting etc. Review pressurized equipment for safe setup e.g. compressors, jack hammer operations, etc. including cylinder storage and protection Ensure all workers are dressed appropriately per OSHA regulations and wearing all PPE required for the task being performed Review Hot Work and be certain Department of Buildings and Fire Department of New York regulations are followed Review safe work practices with respect to electrical equipment/tools concerns; ensure proper use of GFCIs and grounding on all jobs Review sidewalk sheds, including wall structures, illuminated fixtures Review and recommend best practices for housekeeping with respect to prevention of trip/fall potential and fire protection; ensure clean work areas, use of green dust, prompt action for any spills Review all facets of "fall protection" requirements including but not limited to perimeter protection, floor opening covers, vertical shafts, netting, control access zones, scaffold usage etc. Support of Superintendents will include: Assisting in preparation of specific Site Safety Plan for each construction project Monitor quality of Tool Box Talks and Subcontractor Site Safety Plans and communicate suggestions for improvements Assist on site personnel with accident investigations, review and follow-up Conduct accident/injury review and follow-up with corrective actions Visit each site weekly, and work with Superintendent to identify trends on the job and propose corrective actions, training as necessary Address on-site any safety concerns with the designated superintendent/safety individual or others including Insurance Company personnel On buildings over ten stories, work with Superintendent and Site Safety Manager. Knowledge and Experience Required/Preferred: Excellent working knowledge of NYC Article 33 requirements as well as other DOB safety related articles and provisions a must. This includes but is not limited to safeguards and inspection activity for construction and demolition, safety netting, maintenance of site and adjacent areas, storage of materials and sidewalk inspections At least three years of construction experience in NYC, preferably in a supervisory capacity Strong verbal and written communication skills including being a proactive, persuasive communicator and facilitator who gets satisfaction in helping others become more effective; s/he will have the ability to work well under pressure, and communicate safety guidelines and regulations to Company employees, including its union-represented workforce, as well as Subcontractors, plus provide written accounting of any concerns requiring attention with practical recommendations attached. Experience in preparing and delivering Tool Box Safety talks. Passed and familiar with OSHA 10 hour and 30 hour Construction Training Courses; knowledge of NYC Fire Codes Ability to interact professionally with all levels of management, Department of Buildings and OSHA personnel on site Must be able to prepare Power Point presentations with respect to safety training Working knowledge of crane operations is beneficial, but not a requirement.
