Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide. We are seeking a Bilingual (English/Spanish) Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist in our Columbus, Ohio location. This position is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and evaluating company risk and compliance to assure the immediate and long-term safety and health of employees, contractors and visitors by providing a safe environment and work practices through education and training. This position is also responsible for assisting, monitoring and detecting hazards within the plant and other company facilities. This includes noting any infractions or violations of applicable laws and recommending or taking immediate corrective actions, as necessary. This position may support Allieds other North American plants with any EHS matters. Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that all EHS rules, policies, and practices have been given to and understood by all employees onsite.
  • Ensure that a safe working environment exists for all employees. Be able to identify any areas where safety improvements are possible. Verify EHS improvements are completed. When any violation of safety rules, policies, or practices are observed, appropriate action will be taken to enforce them. Vigorously enforce all EHS policies.
  • Report and document all accidents immediately. Assist with investigating and reporting functions and any unsafe acts or near misses that are known.
  • Strive to reduce accidents, employee injuries, and potential hazards through campaigns or projects.
  • Assist EHS Coordinator with any spills or related events that may occur.
  • Work closely with onsite Occupational Nurse and EHS Coordinator on daily EHS items.
  • Follow all Federal, State, Local, and Allied health and safety rules and regulations. Stay current on all OSHA, EPA, and state-specific regulations. Assist EHS Coordinator with all required governmental reports and file them on time.
  • Always set a good example by working safely and correctly, wearing required PPE and following all safety protocols.
  • Vigorously enforce respirator policy, non-tobacco policy, lock-out/tag-out policy, and all other safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist EHS Coordinator with conducting air quality, silica dust and noise monitoring tests from inception through completion.
  • Assist with disposal of waste as it applies to applicable laws and regulations.
  • Complete safety inspections and observations as required or scheduled.
  • Assist with writing/revising necessary Safety and Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and make sure that SOPs are correct and in the proper format for distribution to all concerned.
  • Be involved in EHS Committees and assist with developing agendas, publishing minutes, and following up on action items.
  • Assist with conducting new employee safety and health orientation meetings.Help design and conduct EHS training meetings.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment but not limited to:
    • Ensure that all safety rules, policies, and practices are adhered to and enforced.
    • Ensure that all processes, equipment, and procedures comply with local, federal and state regulations or guidelines.
    • Assist EHS Coordinator with any necessary information to complete all government reports.
    • Ensure data is gathered correctly and in a timely manner to identify and eliminate hazardous situations. This involves in-house monitoring to collect and analyze dust, noise, fumes, and other chemical survey samples.
    • Attend and organize EHS Meetings when necessary.
    • Assist with trainings and coordination of drills annually Emergency Evacuation (Fire/Tornado)
    • Assist EHS Coordinator when organizing and ensuring all employees receive proper and timely EHS training. This includes new employee orientations and temporary service personnel training.
    • Assist and conduct with safety, health, and environmental training.
    • Audit the Safety and Health programs. Audit operations for compliance to EHS requirements.
  • Assist EHS Coordinator with managing the Safety and Health program for the designated locations including the following:
    • Develop and review safety and health programs, guidelines, and implementation methods that have as their objective the avoidance of personal injury and health hazards.
    • Monitor and review legislative and regulative activities regarding health and safety.
  • Assist and monitor hazardous, non-hazardous and universal waste that may be generated.
    • Follow current and proposed regulations related to hazardous substances.
    • Have company waste tested for potentially hazardous substances.
    • Recommend ways to reduce or eliminate any hazardous substances that may develop in the workplace.
  • Monitor safety and health concerns as they pertain to the designated locations.
    • Follow current and proposed legislation and regulations related to safety and health.
    • Examine problems relating to the design, installation, and operation of equipment used to meet e-standards and guidelines.
  • Potential travel between North American plants may be required to coordinate efforts between sites.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Environmental, Health and Safety, or related discipline, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 year work experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Must be proficient in English and Spanish (bilingual).
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and understanding of local, federal, and state laws is required.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office applications.
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, a team player and have strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
Working Environment
  • Combination of Office and Plant Floor environments.
  • Required to follow Allied Mineral Products Safety & Health policy and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
  • Occasional domestic travel.
