Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Emergency Management and Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This role focuses on regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and maintaining a culture of safety throughout the behavioral health facility.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Safety Program Management

  • Develop, implement, and maintain facility-wide safety policies and procedures
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and environmental rounds
  • Identify hazards and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and hazardous materials program
  • Develop and maintain emergency management and disaster preparedness plans
  • Coordinate drills (fire, evacuation, active threat, etc.)
  • Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures
  • Serve as Safety lead during emergencies when applicable

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, CMS, Joint Commission standards)
  • Support compliance audits, surveys, and accreditation processes
  • Maintain required safety documentation and reporting logs
  • Collaborate with Compliance to address deficiencies and corrective action plans

Incident Reporting & Risk Management

  • Use data to identify patterns and risks
  • Report findings to leadership and compliance committees
  • Investigate safety incidents, accidents, and near misses
  • Perform root cause analyses and recommend corrective actions
  • Track and trend incidents

Environment of Care Oversight

  • Monitor ligature risks and behavioral health safety standards
  • Conduct environmental risk assessments specific to psychiatric settings
  • Collaborate with nursing, facilities, and leadership to maintain a safe therapeutic environment

Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary.

Qualifications

Special Qualifications/Education

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in healthcare safety, risk management, or compliance
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, CMS, NFPA and Joint Commission standards
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to conduct investigations and write reports
  • Strong communication and training skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments

Preferred Requirements:

  • Four years of experience in Occupational Safety, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, or related field preferred
  • Experience in behavioral health preferred

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a background check prior to employment.
