The successful candidate will be accountable for managing medical leave cases (short-term disability (STD), long-term disability (LTD), workers compensation, no fault and unapproved disability) for SGI and its regional operations. In this role, you will initiate and process claims, develop and facilitate return to work plans, and manage the job accommodation process. You will also provide operational support and coverage for Leave Management services related to maternity, paternity, family caregiver and compassionate care and other leave types.

Key Accountability

Disability Case Management and Workforce Reintegration

  • Manages medical leave and disability cases from onset to resolution, including initiating and processing claims, coordinating early intervention strategies, and maintaining regular contact with employees throughout their absence.

  • Provides consultative support, advice, and guidance to employees, leaders, employee representatives, and other stakeholders regarding medical absences, rehabilitation, and workforce reintegration.

  • Develops, coordinates, and facilitates individualized return to work plans when employees are medically fit to return, ensuring safe and sustainable reintegration into the workplace.

  • Leads and implements return to work strategies by collaborating with third-party insurers, employees, leaders, unions, medical professionals, and internal partners to align employee abilities with operational and job requirements.

  • Provides expertise and consultation on policies, practices, and complex issues related to disability management, medical leave, rehabilitation, and return to work planning, liaising with Employee Relations as required.

Medical Accommodation

  • Manages cases for both temporary and permanent job accommodation requests by using best practice case management principles.

  • Analyzes and validates medically based restrictions and limitations with healthcare providers to reach a decision upon the employers ability to accommodate.

  • Coordinates independent medical examinations (IME), vocational and/or physical demands assessments when required.

  • Leads the accommodation process, liaising with management and the union to support accommodation considerations and outcomes.

  • Develops modified and/or alternate work opportunities to mitigate absences due to injury and/or illness.

  • Analyzes complex and/or contentious cases and collaborates with all stakeholders to appropriately resolve the issues within the defined parameters of related policies, procedures and processes.

Disability Insurance Program Management

  • Supports the relationship between SGI and the disability insurance carrier.

  • Manages program quality assurance and collaborates with stakeholders to solve program problems as they arise.

  • Provides accurate and timely claim information to SGI Payroll & Benefits and facilitates communication with the insurance carrier to support accurate compensation calculations and benefit entitlements.

  • Supports, tracks and reports metrics related to the disability leave program, including industry comparators.

Program Education, Development and Improvement

  • Develops and delivers education to management, employees and union representatives on medical leave, disability management, accommodation and return-to-work processes.

  • Monitors, evaluates and improves programs and processes related to employee health, leave management and disability management to support effectiveness, consistency and compliance.

  • Leads process improvement initiatives by mapping workflows, identifying efficiencies, engaging stakeholders and supporting implementation of improved practices.

Leadership

  • Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others.

Corporate Management

  • Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.

Education and Experience

  • Four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Health or Business.

  • One of the following certifications or designations: Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) designation, Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC), Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Professional (CVRP), or Registered Rehabilitation Professional (RRP) designation.

  • Five years experience in a disability case management role.

  • A Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of medical leave management, industry best practices, third party insurer plans (STD, LTD, No Fault and WCB).

  • Knowledge of return-to-work practices and duty to accommodate processes and their related best practices.

  • Knowledge of the health and medical aspects of disability case management, including privacy and confidentiality requirements under health information/privacy legislation, to support appropriate communication and collaboration with healthcare professionals.

  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and collective bargaining agreements as they relate to medical leave management, disability management, accommodation, and return-to-work practices, including the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, Employment Insurance Act, the Saskatchewan Employment Act, the Workers Compensation Act, the Health Information Protection Act, and equivalent legislation in the provinces in which SGI operates.

  • Knowledge of health care services, community resources and support services.

  • Skill with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Skill with communication to facilitate consultations and liaison with management, union representatives, healthcare professionals, and with external legislative agencies.

  • Skill with problem solving and ability to analyze needs and outline recommendations to management and outside agencies.

  • Skill in conflict resolution, negotiation, and influencing outcomes with multiple stakeholders in support of return-to-work processes, accommodation compliance, and effective case resolution.
