POSITION: SAFETY OFFICER
COMANCO is seeking an experienced and motivated Safety Officer to lead and support our company-wide safety initiatives across construction and environmental projects. This position plays a critical role in promoting a culture of safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA and MSHA regulations, and providing hands-on support to field operations throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Compliance
- Ensure company compliance with all applicable OSHA, MSHA, and other federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve company safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Conduct risk assessments and recommend preventive and corrective actions to reduce workplace hazards.
- Analyze safety metrics and trends to identify opportunities for improvement and resource allocation.
- Monitor safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and assist management in achieving established safety objectives.
- Maintain OSHA and MSHA records, logs, and reporting requirements.
- Support customer-specific safety requirements and maintain compliance through online safety management portals.
Project Planning & Operational Support
- Assist Operations with pre-job planning activities by reviewing project specifications and identifying potential hazards.
- Participate in Pre-Job Planning meetings and recommend appropriate safety controls.
- Develop and maintain Project Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Facilitate implementation and utilization of the HCSS Safety platform, including inspections, near-miss reporting, incident reporting, and JHA management.
- Prioritize field support while maintaining consistency in safety processes and procedures.
Field Safety
- Conduct regular jobsite audits, inspections, observations, and safety meetings.
- Monitor and mentor employees to ensure safe work practices and compliance with company standards.
- Review safety compliance issues and complete follow-up inspections to verify corrective actions.
- Conduct site-specific safety training and orientations as required.
- Ensure all required safety postings are displayed and maintained at project sites.
- Verify project sites are properly stocked with required safety supplies, including first-aid kits, eyewash stations, and related equipment.
- Inspect equipment and report findings to management.
- Maintain effective communication with project personnel, client representatives, consultants, and customer safety personnel.
- Exercise stop-work authority when conditions or activities present an imminent risk to personnel, equipment, or property.
Incident Management & Workers' Compensation
- Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, property damage events, and near misses.
- Conduct root cause analyses and prepare detailed incident investigation reports.
- Develop and recommend corrective and preventive actions to reduce recurrence.
- Coordinate workers' compensation claims, including claim reporting, investigations, modified duty assignments, and communication with employees, supervisors, and insurance carriers.
Training & Employee Development
- Deliver safety training programs, orientations, and toolbox talks.
- Support Human Resources during the onboarding process by conducting new-hire safety training.
- Create and deliver safety presentations for employees, management, and customers as requested.
- Promote employee engagement and participation in company safety initiatives.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Respond to employee and management inquiries regarding safety policies, procedures, and programs.
- Participate in weekly Fleet Safety Meetings.
- Solicit vendor quotes, create purchase orders, and coordinate invoice processing as needed.
- Maintain safety documentation, records, and reports.
- Assist all departments with safety-related matters.
- Participate in professional organizations, industry seminars, and continuing education opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) years of safety experience in construction, environmental services, heavy civil, mining, industrial, or related industries.
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA and MSHA regulations and compliance requirements.
- Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
