What We Are Looking For
Baylor University is seeking a dedicated and proactive Campus & Student Safety Specialist to join our Environmental Health & Safety team. This position plays a vital role in fostering a culture of safety across the university by supporting and enhancing student health and safety initiatives. Working under the direction of the Campus Safety Manager, the Campus & Student Safety Specialist will help ensure that Baylor's safety programs, procedures, and protocols meet or exceed OSHA and other applicable standards.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business Management, or a related filed; Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum 3+ years of safety experience in a general industry or construction environment.
- Advanced safety training or relevant certifications (e.g., OSHA 30, CSP, ASP).
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence the safety culture across the university.
- In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, OSHA standards, and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to conduct effective safety training and clearly communicate safety protocols.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Computer proficiency with all relevant software.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks efficiently.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit at a desk and work on a computer for prolonged periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Must be able to travel throughout the campus and facilities (indoors & outdoors) to conduct safety inspections, audits, and evaluations.
- Ability to climb ladders or all sizes and dimensions for inspection purposes.
- Meet qualifications for university Respiratory Protection Program. Must be able to don and work wearing a half face respirator or N95 in special circumstances.
Driving Requirements
- Must be able to qualify as a university approved driver.
*All applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
What You Will Do
Campus & Student Safety Specialist
Under the direction, supervision, and assistance of the Campus Safety Manager to monitor safety and health programs, policies, and procedures that meet OSHA and other applicable requirements. This position will be responsible for carrying out the following duties as assigned:
Review student event request forms
- Conduct basic hazard assessment
- Ensure questions are answered and concerns are mitigated
- Engage in organizational meetings
- Do event site pre-inspection as needed
- Attend events as assigned
- Participate in post event evaluation sessions as needed
Review student incident report form submittals, determine root causes, recommend corrective actions, submit work orders as needed.
Student special project training assistance and evaluation
- Computer-based training curriculum choices based on assigned task
- Hands-on training assessment
- Training follow-up to assure completion and understanding
Students' campus mode of transportation choices; evaluation/hazard identification/mitigation
- Electric personal transportation vehicles:
- Bicycles
- Scooters
- Hoverboards
- Skateboards
Conduct routine facility safety inspections and risk assessments to ensure a safe environment to enhance the university experience.
OSHA programmatic departmental compliance assistance audits (non-lab)
- Hazardous Chemical Inventory Evaluation
- Exposure Control
- Machine Guarding
- Fall Protection
- Personal Protective Equipment
Other
- Promote student engagement in safety initiatives for campus related issues to drive continuous improvement in all that is planned and carried out.
- Serve as emergency backup personnel to the Hazardous Materials program in special circumstances.
- Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
- Ability to comply with university policies
