The Risk Safety Specialist performs specialized work effectively coordinating safety and risk program practices, procedures, and reporting to ensure compliance with college guidelines and policies, OSHA regulations, EPA regulations, HIPAA regulations, federal, state, and local laws district wide all while maintaining absolute confidentiality of the information and situations encountered on the job.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  1. Assists the Director of Risk Management with the Colleges district-wide risk management function.
  2. Researches, coordinates, recommends, implements, monitors, records, and drafts changes to current and new risk and safety programs, procedures, and trainings to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  3. Presents safety trainings. Maintains employee training records and follows up on incomplete employee training.
  4. Conducts job hazard analysis. Provides information to supervisors and employees on state and federal regulations, risk related information, and statistics. Reviews departmental safety programs, activities, and procedures to identify habits, trends, and patterns that affect the safe and efficient operation of departments. Develops programs to create a safety conscious culture throughout the entire district.
  5. Designated Chemical Hygiene Officer. Maintains and updates Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  6. Responsible for chemical handling safety. Coordinates hazardous waste handling, collection, disposal, and recordkeeping.
  7. Coordinates, facilitates, and/or performs weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual safety inspections with vendors, facilities, and departments including but not limited to eyewash stations, safety showers, fire extinguishers, ladders, exit lights, emergency lighting, Personal Protection Equipment, and general facilities. Analyzes and records inspection reports, reports deficiencies, and proposes corrective actions. Implements and monitors corrective actions approved by the Director of Risk Management.
  8. Completes safety audits including but not limited to facilities audits, PPE audits, animal care/USDA audits, chemical inventory audits, and controlled drug/pharmaceutical audits. Records audit results, reports deficiencies, proposes corrective actions, implements and monitors corrective actions.
  9. Responsible for coordinating, tracking, and ensuring compliance with College departments on their required safety or compliance inspections/audits.
  10. Ensures personal protective equipment, first aid supplies, machine guarding, etc. is on hand and in use by the appropriate departments. Completes periodic checks to ensure compliance standards are met.
  11. Completes accident investigations. Determines root cause and develops/implements strategies to provide a safe environment while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
  12. Communicates safety information to all levels of the organization in an accurate, clear, and timely manner.
  13. Coordinates and chairs the Employee Safety Committee including developing agendas and maintaining minutes. Promotes a safety culture throughout each department, building, and location.
  14. Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
  15. Works flexible work schedule as needed to complete essential duties.

DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES :

  1. Completes compliance audits, which could include but not limited to payroll reviews, HR audits, Clery audits. Communicates findings and recommends risk mitigation strategies.
  2. Assists with compiling and processing confidential insurance and accident claims.
  3. Assists with reviewing Certificates of Insurance (COI) to ensure the Colleges standards are met. Records and files COI. Communicates with deficiencies with the client/insurance company and the Director of Risk Management.
  4. Assists with maintaining accurate inventory of district wide assets.
  5. Assists with the confidential record retention process district-wide to ensure state compliance.
  6. Attends required trainings to maintain up-to-date job knowledge.
  7. Assists as directed in the event that it is necessary to deploy the Campus Emergency Response Plan, including performing as the Safety Director in the absence of the Director of Risk Management.
  8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  6. Works cooperatively with students and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting: (Occasional) Up to 45 lbs.

  1. Bachelors degree with three (3) years work experience in risk management or safety programs preferred. In lieu of a bachelors degree, some college classes in Risk Management, Safety, Chemistry, or Business and 5 years experience in risk management or safety programs
  2. OSHA 30-hour general industry training certification preferred.
  3. Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word required.
  4. Advanced verbal and written communication skills required.
  5. Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills required.
  6. Ability to use initiative and judgment to make decisions.
  7. Strong comprehension and commitment to maintaining confidentiality required.
  8. Ability to work as a productive team member while meeting individual responsibilities in a multi-task position.
  9. Highly developed interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work in a culturally diverse workplace.
  10. Ability to work varied hours required.
  11. Ability to travel to and work from all Black Hawk College locations required.
  12. Valid drivers license required.
