About the Job

The School of Dentistry (SOD) human resources consultant will be a member of an HR team that provides strategic HR consultation, support, and services to the school's leadership and community. This individual will provide one-on-one consultation and coaching to academic and clinical department chairs, directors, supervisors, and staff to assist them in identifying and resolving problems.

The HR Consultant will serve as a strategic partner and general HR support to the department chairs and Associate Deans, directors, supervisors, and all employee groups within the departments of Diagnostic and Biological Sciences, Primary Dental Care, and Clinical Systems.

This individual must be highly knowledgeable of HR policies and practices, such as employee relations and contract interpretation, to provide prompt and accurate information, and will often partner with the University's central Office of Human Resources.

Working Environment: Hybrid with three days in the office. Please note: The first 90 days will require five (5) days in the office per week, for learning purposes.

Job Responsibilities:

Employee and Labor Relations - 40%

  • Advise and consult on performance and discipline issues.
  • Assist with Employee Engagement Planning.
  • Meet with supervisors, staff, and faculty to investigate and recommend solutions for workplace behavior issues.
  • Provide coaching and training related to performance management and discipline within the guidelines of various employee groups.
  • Explain, interpret, and advise on employment laws, labor contracts, and University policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate problem-solving and dispute resolution between employees and managers.
  • Represent management in grievance processes.
  • Collaborate with University offices, such as Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, Office of the General Counsel, Office of Human Resources, and Disability Services, to resolve complex issues.
  • Conduct investigations, prepare findings, and recommend outcomes related to policy violations, harassment, discrimination, and unprofessional behavior claims.
  • Function as a resource to faculty and staff on terms and conditions of employment.
  • Manage non-renewal and separation processes for all P&A and contract Faculty positions.

Organizational Analysis and Development - 35 %

  • Design and conduct tailored training programs for the College departments.
  • Advise hiring units on hiring, terminations, compensation, and benefits.
  • Identify the need for external consultation and recommend appropriate resources.
  • Develop and maintain HR metrics for the department.
  • Track, analyze, and present trending data on a quarterly basis.
  • Prepare the Council of Chairs data presentation, 2-3 times per year.
  • Collaborate with leadership on potential organizational restructuring.

Consultation and Relationship Management - 20%

  • Solve problems and make recommendations on complex issues.
  • Analyze information promptly and make decisions.
  • Build collaborative relationships with departments they support.
  • Provide oversight and recommendations on policy and procedure.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Inclusive Excellence on shared goals and initiatives.
  • Serve as HR liaison for search committees.
  • Ensure legal compliance.

Special Projects - 5%

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in human resources or related field plus six (6) years of human resources experience, including problem-solving, performance management, compensation, and investigations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in HR or related field.
  • Professional human resources credentials such as SHRM-CP/PHR, SHRM-SCP/SPHR.
  • Experience in human resources in higher education and/or the public sector.
  • Experience conducting employment and EOAA investigations and responding to complaints and grievances.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with analyzing large data sets.
  • Experience with developing and conducting training sessions.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $92,000 - $96,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience
